Catastrophic Cycling

 Xin chào mọi người!

January is nearing its end! Congratulations. I know this month can seem like a drag for many, so keep pushing on. Spring is just around the corner. This week was yet another standard crazy week here in Vietnam. I honestly don't know what to expect the second I walk out of my apartment door for the day.

Preparation Day Fun:

Last Preparation Day we went to an American restaurant here named Eddie's and got some good burgers and milkshakes. It was a bit strange hearing a bunch of American music and food again, but also a little refreshing. It was nice to have some french fries in a nice air conditioned restaurant. Afterwards, we went and played at a golf simulator in a nearby mall. For dinner that night, we ate with Elder Vassantachart's father who was visiting for business at a sushi restaurant.

Zone Conference:

Tuesday I had my first zone conference. It was great! We talked about the importance of setting goals and being organized. We are really wanting a temple here in Vietnam- and if we work effectively and pursue that goal, I have faith it will be achieved. We had some delicious Pizza Hut for lunch. They ordered 6, one meter long pizzas for everyone which was delicious. Also got to see friends from the MTC again! (Except Elder Roberts who is braving the cold weather in Hanoi... You were there in spirit).

Catastrophic Cycling:

While attempting to go finding this week, we had to cross a busy bridge to get to the area we wanted to go. While I was merging onto the bridge with traffic, the entire back wheel of my bicycle suddenly stopped moving. My gear shifter, chain and eveything else completely fell off my bike and got tangled in the spokes. Despite our best efforts there was no way we were going to fix it on the street. See Google Photos for videos.

Elder Luân and I then proceeded to walk the bikes to the nearest repair shop about 30min away. We dropped the bikes off and are still waiting to hear what to do next. As of now, it will be lots of riding the bus and taxis!

Finding at The People's Party Municipal Center:

While finding one day Elder Luân took me to a really neat looking building. We walked in and I quickly realized we were in a political center for the government. What was even funnier? That day I was wearing a white shirt, red tie, and navy blue pants. Nothing like wearing red white and blue in the center of a foreign government office building. People were friendly, but also really confused why I was there. We didn't stay long. Queue: One of these things is not like the other...

Spiritual Thought:

This week I wanted to share a conference talked called Humble to Accept and Follow By Elder Joni L. Koch Of the Seventy. He speaks about how humility blesses us and allows us to grow. When we put our trust into the Lord and continue being humble, we will be blessed with guidance and peace.

Humble to Accept and Follow

All is going great here in Vietnam! I'm doing well and enjoying the mission. Everyday is an adventure. Wishing you all a happy end to January and a lovely start to February.

Love you all!

Sincerely,

Anh Cả Reynolds

Welcome to Vietnam - Don't Take the Honking Personally

Xin chào mọi người!  They're sending me to Vietnam... it's a whole lot of scooters... Things have been great here in Vietnam. I'm currently sitting in a park after doing my second dance practice with some people we met last week. We're waiting for a friend to meet us to play some pickleball. If I wrote down everything that has happened within the past week this email would be too large to send, so here is a brief bullet point list of the highlights:  -Landed in Hanoi and did orientation. Was told I would be serving in the Ho Chi Minh area. Woo hoo! My Mission Presidency is awesome.  -Met my companion Elder Luân. His English is good but communicating is sometimes still difficult. 😅 I am constantly speaking Vietnamese, which has helped me learn a lot.  -Had first English Activity night and taught about Idaho, haha. The slideshow was already made by someone from Vietnam, and went over all the highlights of things like: Potatoes, sagebrush, dairy cows, and irrigation....

Hours in Hồ Chí Minh

Alo, This week was an adventure - filled with good stories and blessings. I'm a little tired, but I'd rather be a tired missionary than a bored missionary.  Monday - Trains, Planes, and Automobiles Monday afternoon while enjoying  Preparation Day in the Old Quarter District, we got a call from the Elders who help our Mission President, the Assistants. The Assistants were flying down later in the evening to Hồ Chí Minh City to do a mission presentation -- but unfortunately one of them became very ill and would be unable to fly. They asked if I would be willing to pack and head down to help. Certainly wasn't what we expected, but we were ready to help. Elder McBride and I traveled back to Hà Đông, packed, and headed over. Elder McBride stayed with the ill missionary, while the other Assistant and I went down South.  We left at 7:15pm and landed in Hồ Chí Minh at 9:30pm. We got a taxi and stayed the night in Thảo Điền- the very first area I served in Vietnam, one year ...

We Didn't Start The Fire

(Note from Sally: This week is an extra long letter, so good thing you have the holiday break to read it. :) Ethan just found out this morning that he was on the  Vietnamese National News  - his part starts at the 19:00min mark. Also, he was asked to write his testimony and thoughts about this Christmas to share with our home ward here in Idaho, so I attached those in a Word Doc as well. ) Merry Christmas!   Alo mọi người, Yes - the title of the email is a reference to Billy Joel "We Didn't Start The Fire" and it is relevant to the story.  This week was one for the books. That's why this email is going to be a bit longer than the previous ones I have been sending. We've had about everything, from the police in our apartment to a wild Branch Christmas Party. Make sure to check out the Google Photo Album this week.  Last Monday - The Vietnamese UFO:  Last Preparation Day, as I mentioned in the previous email we were visiting a Non-Profit Government Organizati...
