Forgetful Fun

 Alo,

Hope you are doing well. This week was a pretty busy week, however nothing extremely eventful or out of ordinary happened. Lots of little things happen throughout the week, and upon reviewing my journal it looks like I have forgotten to write them down. Regardless, this week was really fun. It was a good week.

For P-Day last week Elder Esplin and I got some burgers and then went golfing at a golf simulator. It was really nice - we had a whole private room, so no one other than us would suffer through my terrible golfing. My record was 143 yards - equal to that of a 16 year old female pro golfer - so watch out. I guess I am just trying to get ready for the future business meetings. The golf simulator is in a large megamall, and we took the elevator to the top floor to find it was an observation deck over Hanoi. Great view, if it wasn't raining and over 250+ air quality index, but we still got to see a little. Upon a little more exploration we found a cool infinity pool at the rooftop bar/lounge, so we took a selfie. It was a relaxing and restful P-Day.

Tuesday, we started the week on an exchange from two Elders, the Zone Leaders, who currently serve in Vietnam. We had a ton of lessons for the day and stayed really busy. We ended the night at the mission home in preparation for our mission leadership council the following day.

Wednesday MLC went smoothly and it was fun to meet everyone. We finished and came back to the church to have more lessons. We have recently had some success with our online referrals coming in, so we are calling people all day long and teaching. It has been interesting.

Thursday - Saturday was our typical routine. We had English activities and celebrated International Women's Day. We got our sisters some treats and celebrated with the YSA. At our English Activity this week, we were discussing sports. For our listening activity we watched the Studio C "Scott Sterling" video. It was hilarious -- some people thought it was real, some people thought it was a joke, and most people couldn't understand the fake Australian accents. Fortunately, you don't need to speak a common language to laugh at a guy getting smacked in the face with a football. We are going to try to incorporate more Studio C into our English Activities. ;)

Sunday we had a baptism of one of our friends named em Lồng. His older brother was just baptized a couple months ago, so he was able to baptize him and help him prepare. It was a spiritual experience and we are excited to have him join the branch.

Spiritual Thought || Mosiah 23:21-22

21 Nevertheless the Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea, he trieth their patience and their faith. 22 Nevertheless—whosoever putteth his trust in him the same shall be lifted up at the last day. Yea, and thus it was with this people.

It isn't necessary for me to remind us we face challenges and trials in this life - we have them daily. However, I have come to learn and appreciate the lessons God has taught me. It stretches my patience and faith, but simultaneously helps me grow and be more flexible. All he requires is our trust - which isn't easy - but is certainly worth it.

I'm doing pretty well. I enjoy what I am doing and I'm learning everyday. Sometimes the days can be a little slow, but I remind myself who I am doing this for and my perspective changes.

Life is good and phở is tasty. Love you,
Anh Cả Reynolds

Welcome to Vietnam - Don't Take the Honking Personally

Xin chào mọi người!  They're sending me to Vietnam... it's a whole lot of scooters... Things have been great here in Vietnam. I'm currently sitting in a park after doing my second dance practice with some people we met last week. We're waiting for a friend to meet us to play some pickleball. If I wrote down everything that has happened within the past week this email would be too large to send, so here is a brief bullet point list of the highlights:  -Landed in Hanoi and did orientation. Was told I would be serving in the Ho Chi Minh area. Woo hoo! My Mission Presidency is awesome.  -Met my companion Elder Luân. His English is good but communicating is sometimes still difficult. 😅 I am constantly speaking Vietnamese, which has helped me learn a lot.  -Had first English Activity night and taught about Idaho, haha. The slideshow was already made by someone from Vietnam, and went over all the highlights of things like: Potatoes, sagebrush, dairy cows, and irrigation....

Hours in Hồ Chí Minh

 Alo, This week was an adventure - filled with good stories and blessings. I'm a little tired, but I'd rather be a tired missionary than a bored missionary.  Monday - Trains, Planes, and Automobiles Monday afternoon while enjoying  Preparation Day in the Old Quarter District, we got a call from the Elders who help our Mission President, the Assistants. The Assistants were flying down later in the evening to Hồ Chí Minh City to do a mission presentation -- but unfortunately one of them became very ill and would be unable to fly. They asked if I would be willing to pack and head down to help. Certainly wasn't what we expected, but we were ready to help. Elder McBride and I traveled back to Hà Đông, packed, and headed over. Elder McBride stayed with the ill missionary, while the other Assistant and I went down South.  We left at 7:15pm and landed in Hồ Chí Minh at 9:30pm. We got a taxi and stayed the night in Thảo Điền- the very first area I served in Vietnam, one year ...

We Didn't Start The Fire

(Note from Sally: This week is an extra long letter, so good thing you have the holiday break to read it. :) Ethan just found out this morning that he was on the  Vietnamese National News  - his part starts at the 19:00min mark. Also, he was asked to write his testimony and thoughts about this Christmas to share with our home ward here in Idaho, so I attached those in a Word Doc as well. ) Merry Christmas!   Alo mọi người, Yes - the title of the email is a reference to Billy Joel "We Didn't Start The Fire" and it is relevant to the story.  This week was one for the books. That's why this email is going to be a bit longer than the previous ones I have been sending. We've had about everything, from the police in our apartment to a wild Branch Christmas Party. Make sure to check out the Google Photo Album this week.  Last Monday - The Vietnamese UFO:  Last Preparation Day, as I mentioned in the previous email we were visiting a Non-Profit Government Organizati...
